Confused, he returned to the shore. The turtle was gone. A dreadful feeling was
beginning to grow in his stomach. Cautiously, at first, and then abandoning all
caution, he began to ask the people he saw on the beach
where his family had gone.
No one knew. No one had heard of him or his family. The people gathered around as this stranger with the elaborately decorated box asked about a family they never remembered. Finally, they summoned the oldest woman in the village. Yes, she said, she remembered the name Urashima Taro. It was a name she had not heard in years. There had been an Urashima Taro who had been lost at sea. In any case, his boat had returned to shore, riderless. The family had gradually dispersed. The house had been abandoned.
